Nollywood drama, Her Daughters’ Mother, has been selected for the 2026 edition of Film Africa, a festival celebrating African and diaspora cinema scheduled to hold in London from October 23 to November 1.
The 109-minute film, written and directed by Chinazaekpere Chukwu, will be screened on October 28 at EbonyLife Place London as part of the festival’s programme.
Women in the Arts announced the film’s selection in an Instagram post celebrating Chukwu’s feature directorial debut.
The organisation expressed pride in the filmmaker’s achievement, describing the opportunity to take her first feature film to an international audience as a significant milestone.
Set in Benin City, Edo State, Her Daughters’ Mother explores motherhood, marriage, family relationships and societal pressure on women to produce male children.
The drama follows Ejiro, a woman who was married off at the age of 16 and returns to her family home in her thirties as a widow raising two daughters.
Determined to secure a better future for her children, Ejiro enters a second marriage. However, her new husband’s insistence on having a male heir creates challenges within the family.
The film also explores the experiences of Ejiro’s eldest daughter, Ejaita, a teenager who dreams of becoming a doctor but struggles with her mother’s overprotectiveness.
Film Africa, presented by the Royal African Society, showcases films from Africa and its diaspora through screenings and other industry-related activities.
The festival provides a platform for African filmmakers to reach international audiences and promotes conversations around African stories, identities and experiences.
The selected film will be screened at EbonyLife Place London, a cultural, entertainment and cinema destination established by Nigerian media entrepreneur Mo Abudu and the EbonyLife Group.
The venue features the 160-seat Amani Auditorium, dedicated to African and Black cinema, with programmes that include film screenings, industry discussions and cultural events.
