One Killed, Five Injured In Clash At NDC Support Rally In Delta.

One person has been killed and five others injured following a violent clash at a political rally organised by the Obedient/OK Movement in support of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate in Asaba, Delta State.

The incident occurred at about 12:15 p.m. on Saturday, November 7, along Nnebisi Road in Asaba. The identities of the deceased and injured persons have yet to be established.

The Delta State Police Command, in a statement, said it had received intelligence about the likelihood of violence and invited the rally organisers to a security meeting.

The police said the organisers were advised against holding an open-road procession and encouraged to use a designated venue where adequate security could be provided.

However, the organisers reportedly proceeded with the procession despite the warning.

The Command said its operatives responded to a distress call, rushed to the scene and evacuated the injured victims to the hospital for medical attention.

It added that security had been reinforced in the area to prevent further violence, while investigations were ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible.

The Commissioner of Police, Samuel Erale, condemned the violence and reiterated that political parties have the right to conduct lawful campaigns and other political activities.

He, however, advised political parties and their supporters to avoid road processions in the interest of public safety and liaise with the police ahead of political gatherings to ensure adequate security arrangements.

The police commissioner assured residents of a thorough and impartial investigation and urged anyone with useful information to contact the Command through 09155570008 or 09155570007.
