All Inmates Safely Returned After Attack on Correctional Vehicle in Rivers.

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) says all inmates being conveyed to court have been safely returned to the Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, following an attack on their transport vehicle.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, around the Oil Mill Market area along Aba Road, when the vehicle conveying the inmates and correctional personnel reportedly ran into a traffic jam and was allegedly attacked by some individuals.

The Service Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Corrections, J.N. Osuji, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday.

Osuji said members of the armed escort team fired warning shots into the air in an attempt to repel the attackers and protect the inmates.

The NCoS, however, expressed concern over a fatal incident associated with the attack, sympathising with the family of the victim and others affected.

The Service condemned the attack, warning that such actions endangered lives, threatened public safety and obstructed the lawful discharge of official duties.

It urged members of the public to remain calm, exercise restraint and respect law enforcement operations, particularly in tense situations.

The correctional authority also disclosed that relevant security agencies had commenced an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible.

It pledged to cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities to ensure that the matter was addressed in accordance with the law.

The NCoS reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safe custody of inmates, protecting its personnel and maintaining public safety while carrying out its statutory responsibilities.

It also appealed to residents to allow the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation.
