The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested four persons over an incident involving officers of the Safer Highway Patrol along the Awo-Iropora Road, Igede-Ekiti, dismissing allegations that the officers assaulted and robbed passengers as false and misleading.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abutu Sunday, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, following the circulation of a viral video in which some travellers accused police officers of threatening them with knives and cutlasses, assaulting and robbing them.
According to the statement, the incident occurred at about 12 noon on November 7, 2026, when a Safer Highway Patrol Team 004 stopped two Toyota Hiace buses during a routine stop-and-search operation and requested their vehicle documents.
The Command alleged that rather than produce the documents, four occupants began recording the officers, shouting at them and making allegations of theft and armed robbery.
One of the occupants, identified as 32-year-old Seriki Sikirulahi, subsequently uploaded the video on TikTok.
The Police said preliminary investigations and a review of the footage showed that no officer wielded a knife or cutlass, assaulted any passenger or engaged in robbery, adding that the officers acted professionally and in line with established procedures.
The Command described the allegations as deliberate misrepresentation of police activities, warning against the use of selective video recordings to obstruct officers performing their lawful duties or incite public hostility against them.
It, however, acknowledged the right of citizens to record public activities, stressing that such rights must be exercised within the confines of the law.
The statement added that the suspects had been arrested and were undergoing investigation in line with the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Falade Adegoroye Micheal.
The Command urged members of the public to disregard what it described as misleading narratives, remain calm and cooperate with police officers carrying out legitimate security operations.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to discharging its statutory responsibilities professionally and impartially while respecting the rights of citizens.
