The Anambra State Government has announced a ban on the unauthorized construction of speed bumps on public roads, warning that individuals and communities who violate the directive will face stiff sanctions.The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, in a statement issued on Saturday. According to him, the government introduced the measure to protect road infrastructure, improve road safety, and ensure that traffic-calming measures meet approved engineering standards.Dr. Mefor said the indiscriminate construction of speed bumps across the state has become a growing concern. He explained that many of the unapproved structures damage roads, disrupt the smooth flow of traffic, and pose safety risks to motorists and other road users.

Anambra Government Introduces Approval Process for Speed Bumps. Under the new policy, no individual, community, organization, or institution is permitted to construct a speed bump on any public road without first obtaining approval from the Anambra State Government. The commissioner disclosed that all proposed speed bumps and their locations must be reviewed and approved by the appropriate authorities before construction begins. He added that the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure will provide a standard design and specification for every approved speed bump to ensure uniformity, durability, and compliance with road safety regulations. Speed Bumps Limited to Approved Locations. The state government said speed bumps will only be permitted in locations where they are genuinely needed to enhance public safety. According to the directive, approved locations may include schools, markets, churches, hospitals, and other high-pedestrian areas, subject to assessment and approval by the relevant government authorities. Officials explained that restricting speed bumps to critical locations will help improve traffic flow while protecting pedestrians and motorists. Government Warns Residents Against Illegal Construction. The Anambra State Government warned residents, communities, and organisations against constructing speed bumps without official approval. It stressed that anyone found installing unauthorized speed bumps or building them outside approved locations will face stiffer sanctions in line with existing laws and regulations. The government urged communities seeking traffic-calming measures to channel their requests through the appropriate government agencies instead of taking unilateral action.
