A Professor of Tests and Measurements at the Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere-Ekiti, BOUESTI, Oke Ajogbeje, has called for the promotion of feedback literacy among teachers and students at all levels of education in Nigeria.
Professor Ajogbeje made the call while delivering the 11th Inaugural Lecture of BOUESTI in Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
Speaking on the importance of effective assessment and feedback in education, the don said feedback remains a critical component of the teaching and learning process because it enables learners to understand their strengths, identify areas that require improvement and take appropriate steps towards better academic performance.
According to him, effective feedback gives learners the opportunity to engage, reflect, act and demonstrate improvement, making it an essential tool for achieving meaningful learning outcomes.
He therefore advocated the strengthening of formative assessment across all levels of education in Nigeria, stressing that assessment should not be limited to measuring students’ performance but should also provide useful information that can guide further learning.
Ajogbeje tasks stakeholders on effective assessment. Professor Ajogbeje called on education policymakers, curriculum planners, teacher trainers and universities to ensure that effective assessment and feedback mechanisms are integrated into the Nigerian education system.
He also urged school administrators and classroom teachers to develop practices that would make feedback more useful and accessible to learners.
The inaugural lecturer further encouraged students to actively engage with feedback provided by their teachers, saying learners have an important role to play in using assessment outcomes to improve their academic performance.
He noted that developing feedback literacy among both teachers and students would help strengthen teaching and learning while promoting continuous improvement in the education sector.
BOUESTI VC backs feedback-driven learning. Speaking at the event, the Vice Chancellor of BOUESTI, Professor Babatunde Omojola, described feedback as an important tool for enhancing students’ academic performance.
Professor Omojola said effective feedback helps students understand their academic progress and identify areas where improvement is required.
The Vice Chancellor added that the recommendations made by Professor Ajogbeje were already being implemented by lecturers of the university as part of efforts to improve teaching and learning outcomes.
He said BOUESTI remained committed to adopting practices that would enhance academic standards and improve the quality of education delivered to students. The inaugural lecture brought together academics, education stakeholders and members of the university community to examine the role of assessment and feedback in improving educational outcomes in Nigeria.
The lecture also highlighted the need for stronger collaboration among policymakers, educators, institutions and learners in building an education system where assessment serves not only as a means of measuring achievement but also as a tool for continuous learning and improvement.
