The spokesperson for the Ebonyi Civil Society Coalition Group, Charles Otu, has alleged that the Chuba Okadigbo International Airport in Ebonyi State is currently being used as a venue for church services due to the absence of regular commercial flight operations.

Otu made the allegation while appearing on a live Television’s Morning Show on Thursday, where he criticised the current state of activities at the airport.

According to him, apart from private chartered flights allegedly used by Governor Francis Nwifuru and his wife, commercial airlines are no longer operating at the facility.

“It is good you remembered the airport because I would have forgotten it,”

Otu said during the interview.

He alleged that a church had taken over parts of the airport and now conducts Sunday and midweek services at the facility.

“A church has taken over that airport and is using that airport for Sunday and midweek services. The airport has become a worship centre,” Otu said.

The civil society spokesperson further claimed that videos showing church activities at the airport had previously circulated online.

“As we speak, if you doubt, we are going to forward the videos to you because we saw the video trend online some time ago,” he added.

Otu alleged that aside from private chartered flights, no commercial or privately operated passenger flights currently land at the airport.

He described the alleged situation as unfortunate and expressed concern over the state of operations at the multi-billion-naira aviation facility.“

A church has, unfortunately, taken over that airport and is using that airport for church service.

That is the correct state of affairs at that airport,” he said.The Chuba Okadigbo International Airport was constructed by the Ebonyi State Government to boost air transportation, investment, tourism and economic activities in the state.

The latest allegations have, however, raised fresh concerns about the level of commercial activities and utilisation of the airport.As of the time of filing this report, the Ebonyi State Government had yet to publicly respond to Otu’s allegations.
