Two Video Assistant Referee officials involved in the controversial Erling Haaland goal during the Manchester derby have been suspended from the next round of Premier League fixtures.

VAR Matt Donohue and Assistant VAR Blake Antrobus will not officiate in the Premier League until after the upcoming international break, according to Sky Sports News.

The decision was reportedly taken by the Chief Refereeing Officer, Howard Webb, and his management team following the controversial incident at Old Trafford.

Manchester City defeated Manchester United 1-0, with Haaland scoring the only goal of the match.

VAR error admitted

The goal has attracted significant attention after the refereeing body, Pro Ref, admitted that an error was made during the build-up.

City midfielder Enzo Fernandez was adjudged to have been in an offside position while attempting to play the ball before it reached Haaland, who subsequently found the net.

Pro Ref said it had contacted Manchester United to acknowledge the mistake and explained that the VAR should have recommended an on-field review by the referee before the goal was allowed to stand.

The decision sparked criticism of the officiating team, particularly over the failure to intervene before Haaland’s goal was awarded.

Other derby officials retain appointments

Despite the suspension of Donohue and Antrobus, other officials who handled the Manchester derby have retained their assignments for the next round of Premier League matches.

Referee Michael Oliver, assistant referees Stuart Burt and Tim Wood, and fourth official Paul Tierney have all been appointed to officiate upcoming league fixtures.

The suspension of the VAR officials is the latest development from the controversy surrounding Haaland’s goal and the officiating during the Manchester derby.
