NANS Condemns Remand of Former FUOYE SUG President, Plans Peaceful Protests

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the remand of the immediate past Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Comrade Adio, by a Magistrate Court in Ekiti State, describing the development as a violation of due process and the student’s fundamental rights.

In a statement issued by the National President of NANS, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, the association said it had been informed that the former student leader was remanded in prison despite being the complainant in a matter he personally instituted before the court.

According to the statement, available information indicates that Comrade Adio had no criminal charges pending against him. NANS alleged that the case was turned against him through the actions of the Ekiti State Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the presiding Magistrate, describing the development as “judicial rascality,” a gross abuse of due process, and an infringement of his fundamental rights.

Reacting to the incident, the NANS president said he had directed the association’s Joint Campus Council (JCC) Chairman for the Ekiti Axis and the National Head of Administration to begin mobilising members for peaceful actions aimed at demanding justice.

The planned activities, according to the statement, include lawful protests at the Ekiti State High Court, the Magistrate Court, and the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions until Comrade Adio is released and justice is served.

“NANS will not stand by while the rights of Nigerian students are trampled upon,” the statement read, adding that the association remains committed to defending justice, the rule of law, and the fundamental rights of students across the country.

As of the time of filing this report, the Ekiti State Judiciary and the Directorate of Public Prosecutions had not publicly responded to the allegations contained in the NANS statement.
