The Premier League refereeing body, Pro Ref, has admitted an “error of judgement” in the decision surrounding Erling Haaland’s winning goal in Manchester City’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United.

Haaland scored in the 60th minute at Old Trafford, turning in a cross from Josko Gvardiol at the back post.

The goal was initially ruled out for offside by the on-field officials before the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervened and overturned the decision.

The Manchester City striker was subsequently deemed to have been played onside by the boot of Manchester United defender Patrick Dorgu.

However, controversy followed the decision, with questions raised over whether City midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who was in a more central position and appeared to be diving towards the ball, had interfered with play.

In a statement reported by BBC Sport on Sunday, Pro Ref acknowledged that the incident should have been reviewed on the pitch.

The refereeing body said Fernandez did not make contact with the ball, making the question of whether he was interfering with play a subjective decision.

“However, on this occasion, the VAR did not recognise the likely impact of his position and should have recommended an on-field review,” Pro Ref said.

The body added that it had contacted Manchester United to acknowledge what it described as an “error of judgement.”

It also confirmed that the incident would be reviewed.

The result means Manchester City secured a 1-0 victory over their city rivals, with Haaland’s controversial goal ultimately standing.
