Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.

His son, Olusoji Jacobs, announced the death of the legendary actor in an Instagram post on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.Olusoji described his father as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle, while paying tribute to him as “The Lion of Lufodo.

”He also appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect the family’s privacy as they mourn the veteran actor.Olu Jacobs was one of Nigeria’s most prominent actors, with a career spanning theatre, television and film.

Born on July 11, 1942, Jacobs trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, where he developed his acting career before appearing in several British television productions and international films.

He later returned to Nigeria and became one of the most recognisable figures in the country’s film industry, starring in numerous Nollywood productions.

Throughout his decades-long career, Olu Jacobs received several industry honours, including the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Africa International Film Festival.

Beyond acting, Jacobs was also a film executive. He and his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, were associated with the Lufodo Group and contributed to the development of theatre and performing arts in Nigeria.

Jacobs’ death comes after decades of contribution to Nigerian theatre and cinema, during which he became widely recognised as one of the veteran figures who helped shape the country’s film industry.

The actor turned 84 in July 2026, with Joke Silva celebrating his birthday and describing him as “The Lion of Lufodo.”The family has asked the public, particularly bloggers and social media influencers, to respect their privacy during the mourning period.
