The Federal Government says it has recruited more than 30,000 healthcare professionals into federal health facilities in the last two and a half years to strengthen healthcare delivery and address shortages of skilled personnel.
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja at the 50th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the West African College of Physicians.
He said the government was also investing in specialist medical training and better working conditions to reduce the migration of Nigerian health workers abroad.
Pate said ongoing reforms include upgrading health infrastructure, revitalising primary healthcare centres, expanding health insurance coverage and increasing funding to healthcare facilities.
He added that the government had supported the training of thousands of frontline health workers and doubled admission quotas for medical education.
The minister also called for stronger regional cooperation to tackle infectious disease outbreaks, including Ebola, through improved disease surveillance, laboratory capacity and cross-border collaboration.
