Reps Propose 20% Investment Cap On Trust Funds To Protect Beneficiaries.

The House of Representatives has proposed a 20 per cent limit on investments in a single issuer as part of efforts to strengthen trust fund management and protect beneficiaries against financial losses.

The proposal is contained in the Trustee Investment Bill 2026, sponsored under House Bill 2762, which seeks to repeal and re-enact the 1957 Trustee Investments Act to reflect changes in Nigeria’s financial system.

Chairman of the House Committee on Capital Market and Institutions, Solomon Bob, disclosed this on Monday at a public hearing on the bill at the National Assembly in Abuja.

He said the proposed limit would prevent excessive concentration of trust assets in one institution, while expanding investment options to include equities, corporate bonds, real estate, infrastructure funds, private equity and regulated virtual assets.

The bill also seeks to strengthen trustees’ obligations through stricter standards of loyalty, prudence and accountability, while introducing professional investment management, fair valuation of assets and annual reporting to beneficiaries.

It also proposes restrictions on speculative investments and unregulated schemes.
