The family of a kidnapped Kebbi State High Court judge, Justice Faruku Bunza, has claimed that a ₦50 million ransom was paid to secure his release after a week in captivity, contradicting the Kebbi State Police Command’s assertion that no ransom was paid.

According to family members, the kidnappers initially demanded ₦200 million but later agreed to accept ₦50 million following negotiations. The family also alleged that soft drinks, biscuits and other undisclosed items were provided before the judge regained his freedom.

A relative of the judge, identified as Malam Faruku, confirmed that Justice Bunza returned home safely and in good health. Another family member, who requested anonymity, said the judge was seen alighting from a commercial vehicle around 8 a.m. on Monday, signaling his release.

The Kebbi State Police Command had earlier maintained that no ransom was paid to secure the judge’s freedom. However, the family disputed the claim, insisting that the payment was necessary to facilitate his release.Following the judge’s return, family members, friends and well-wishers gathered at his residence in Bunza to celebrate and offer prayers for his safety.

The incident has renewed concerns over the rising cases of kidnapping for ransom across parts of Nigeria, with residents calling on security agencies to strengthen efforts to tackle insecurity and protect citizens from criminal activities.
