The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.

Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad, describing the country’s diversity, human resources, natural resources, warmth and hospitality as key assets capable of driving national development.

The minister stressed that peace and stability were essential to the progress of any nation, urging Nigerians to embrace unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.

He also called on citizens to emulate the patriotism of Nigeria’s founding fathers and contribute to building a stronger nation for future generations.

According to him, the Federal Government remains committed to improving national security, public safety and creating an environment where Nigerians can live, work and pursue their legitimate aspirations with confidence.

Tunji-Ojo further expressed optimism that a better Nigeria is achievable, while paying tribute to the nation’s past heroes and urging citizens to sustain the values of patriotism and national unity as the country marks another milestone in its independence journey.
