FG urges calm after earth tremor recorded in parts of Abuja.

The Federal Government has urged residents of the Federal Capital Territory to remain calm following the earth tremor recorded in parts of Abuja on Tuesday.

Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, directed the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency to provide him with hourly updates on seismic activities in and around the nation’s capital to enable continuous assessment and, where necessary, further engagement with relevant government agencies.

In a statement issued by the Minister’s Special Assistant on Media, Lara Owoeye-Wise, the government said the directive followed confirmation by the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency that several buildings experienced vibrations after the earth tremor on August 4.

According to the agency, its Seismic Monitoring Station in Utako detected the tremor at exactly 11:23 a.m. The tremor reportedly originated from a depth of one kilometre and travelled about four kilometres within five seconds.

Although currently in Washington, D.C., for meetings with American investors on opportunities in Nigeria’s solid minerals sector, the minister assured residents that there was no cause for alarm, stressing that proactive measures had been put in place to safeguard lives and property.

The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency classified the incident as a light earth tremor of between one and two on the Mercalli Intensity Scale, noting that it posed no threat to lives or property apart from brief shaking and public anxiety.

The agency said it would continue to monitor seismic activities across the country and advised residents of the Federal Capital Territory to go about their normal activities without fear.
