The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has approved the design of a proposed monorail project to connect Ikeja Railway Station to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
The project is expected to improve airport connectivity by providing rail transportation for air passengers and commuters travelling from the Lagos Red Line terminus in Ikeja to the airport.
Keyamo disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday following a meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Aviation, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, and engineering teams from both organisations.
He said the proposed monorail would have five stations along the route, linking Ikeja to Terminal One of the international airport, which is currently undergoing reconstruction.
The stations are Ikeja Station, Domestic Airport Station, Beesam Station, Toll Gate Station and Murtala Muhammed International Airport Station.
According to the minister, the project forms part of the broader reconstruction and modernisation programme at the airport, which serves as one of Nigeria’s major international gateways.
The approval follows earlier plans by the Federal Government, in collaboration with the Lagos State Government, to extend the existing rail network from Ikeja to the airport’s domestic and international terminals.
Similarly, the Managing Director of FAAN, Olubunmi Onabanjo-Kuku, disclosed on October 18 that discussions on financing the proposed airport rail link had reached an advanced stage.
The planned connection is expected to link the airport’s three terminals to the Lagos Red Line as part of efforts to modernise airport infrastructure and improve passenger movement.
The airport’s modernisation programme includes the reconstruction of Terminal One and other infrastructure upgrades designed to enhance passenger experience and operational efficiency.
