NSCDC Warns Nigerians Against Fake Videos, Misinformation Amid Insecurity.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has warned Nigerians against spreading misinformation, fake videos and propaganda capable of worsening insecurity and triggering attacks on innocent citizens.

The FCT Commandant of the NSCDC, Dr Olusola Odumosu, gave the warning during a nationwide roadshow organised by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) in Abuja ahead of the 2026 World Public Relations Forum.

The warning was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Chairman of the NIPR FCT Chapter, Stanley Ogadigo.

Odumosu said the circulation of unverified information, particularly on social media, could create panic, heighten political tension and encourage criminal activities such as banditry and kidnapping.

He cited instances where old videos of past crises were circulated as recent events, misleading members of the public and prompting unnecessary panic.

According to him, many Nigerians share information without verifying its authenticity, a practice that could lead to confusion, chaos and attacks on innocent people.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the National Planning Committee for the World Public Relations Forum, Dr Suleiman Haruna, called for greater responsibility in the use of social media, especially amid the growing influence of artificial intelligence.

Haruna said the forum’s theme, “Responsible Communications: Voice of the World,” was designed to address concerns over information integrity and the misuse of communication platforms.

The NIPR FCT Chapter Chairman, Stanley Ogadigo, described Nigeria’s hosting of the forum as a significant opportunity to improve the country’s international reputation.

He called on Nigerians, corporate organisations and other stakeholders to support the event, which he said would help reshape Nigeria’s image before the global community.

The forthcoming World Public Relations Forum is expected to attract about 3,000 delegates from 126 member countries of the Global Alliance. The event is being organised in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation and the NIPR.
