The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has mourned the death of its former Director-General, Colonel Peter Kolawole Obasa, who passed away on Monday, September 28, 2026.

The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, expressed the organisation’s condolences during a visit to the deceased’s residence in Ilorin, Kwara State.

Nafiu described Obasa as a pioneering administrator and one of the principal architects of the NYSC, noting that he helped establish the administrative foundation that has sustained the scheme over the years.

Obasa served as the third Chief Executive of the NYSC from 1979 to 1984, during which the scheme recorded several milestones.The NYSC DG said the late former director-general made invaluable contributions to the development of the scheme and left behind a legacy that would continue to be honoured by its personnel.

He also acknowledged Obasa’s mentorship and support during his lifetime, describing his death as a significant loss to his family and the NYSC community.

Nafiu pledged that the NYSC would continue to build on the foundation laid by its founding fathers while working to strengthen the scheme.

“I present the heartfelt condolences of the entire NYSC community to the Obasa family,” he said.Responding on behalf of the family, Victor Obasa thanked Nafiu and the NYSC management for the condolence visit and honour accorded his late father.

He described Colonel Obasa’s death as unexpected but expressed gratitude to God for his life, achievements and lasting contributions to the NYSC.

“Our family is deeply moved, and we extend our appreciation to the NYSC for the respect you demonstrated towards our father. We are profoundly grateful for your continued remembrance of him,” he said.
