The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, says he has handed over the responsibility of conducting the 2027 general election to God, amid the enormous demands of his office.
Amupitan spoke on Wednesday at the Artificial Intelligence and Democracy Forum 2026, organised by Yiaga Africa in Abuja.
The INEC chairman also assured Nigerians that artificial intelligence would not determine the outcome of the election, insisting that the power to choose the country’s leaders rests with the electorate.
He said AI should support democracy rather than undermine it, as the commission prepares to conduct elections involving more than 103 million registered voters across 176,846 polling units nationwide.
Amupitan disclosed that INEC had completed 10 of the 14 major activities on its election timetable and had begun receiving additional Bimodal Voter Accreditation System devices.
He added that the commission had digitised its candidate nomination process, with more than 15,000 nominations already processed across 22 political parties, despite logistical challenges including insecurity, difficult terrain and poor network coverage in some communities.
