WHO DECLARES NIGERIA EBOLA-FREE FOLLOWING PATIENT’S EVACUATION TO SWITZERLAND

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has confirmed that Nigeria currently has no Ebola cases following the medical evacuation of an infected patient and her husband to Switzerland for continued medical care and monitoring.

The WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Mohamed Janabi, disclosed this in a statement posted on his official X account on Monday, noting that Nigeria would continue monitoring 52 contacts linked to the case.

According to Janabi, the patient, who is a Swiss national, was clinically stable after Nigerian medical teams successfully managed the acute phase of her illness and stabilised her condition before the evacuation.

He explained that Switzerland would assume responsibility for the patient’s continued treatment and the monitoring of her husband, identified as the 53rd contact.

Janabi commended the Federal Government, healthcare workers, clinicians, emergency responders and other partners for their contributions to the Ebola response, describing the development as a significant achievement.

He said the successful management of the case demonstrated Africa’s expertise, resilience and leadership in public health, particularly in responding to health emergencies through international cooperation.

Despite the development, the WHO official stressed the need for continued vigilance, emphasising that contact tracing and other public health response measures must remain in place to prevent further transmission.

He reiterated that Nigeria would maintain close surveillance of the 52 contacts, while Swiss health authorities would oversee the patient’s continued care and monitor her husband.

The development highlights the importance of effective disease surveillance, coordinated emergency response and international collaboration in containing infectious disease outbreaks.
