Adamawa Releases 80 Inmates, Grants Bail to 51 Others.

The Adamawa State Jail Delivery Committee has discharged and acquitted 80 inmates and granted bail to 51 others following a review of cases at the Yolde-Pate Correctional Centre in Yola South Local Government Area of the state.

The committee, led by the state Chief Judge, Justice Hafsat Abdulrahaman, released 55 awaiting-trial inmates and 25 convicted persons, with most of the releases granted on medical and compassionate grounds.

The exercise also saw the committee convict 69 inmates after reviewing their pleas and reduce sentences in several cases involving civil-related matters.

Some of the sentences were reduced from 17 years to four years, six years to two years, and five years to six months, among other adjustments.

Addressing the inmates after the exercise, Abdulrahaman congratulated those released and urged them to shun criminal activities, maintain good conduct and engage in productive ventures.

She also encouraged inmates who remained in custody to be disciplined, exhibit good behaviour and remain hopeful while awaiting their eventual release.

The latest exercise brings the total number of inmates whose cases have been determined by the committee across the correctional facilities covered by the exercise to 237.

The initiative is aimed at reviewing inmates’ cases, addressing prolonged detention and ensuring that eligible persons benefit from appropriate judicial interventions.
