The President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Gusau, has resigned from office alongside members of the NFF Executive Committee.

Gusau announced his resignation during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, August 27, 2026.

According to the Super Eagles news account on X, @SSE_NGA, the NFF president was joined by members of the federation’s executive board in stepping down.

The development comes amid growing concerns over the state of Nigerian football following a difficult run for the country’s national teams.

The Super Falcons recently suffered a historic setback after failing to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Nigeria lost 2-1 to South Africa in the qualifying play-off, marking the first time the country’s senior women’s team will miss the tournament.

Before that, the Super Falcons were eliminated from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations at the quarter-final stage after losing to Cameroon.

The Super Eagles also failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, adding to mounting pressure on the NFF leadership.

NFF faces financial, administrative scrutiny

The federation has also come under scrutiny over its management of a ₦17bn Federal Government intervention fund released in 2024.

Questions have additionally been raised following a fact-finding committee report which alleged that some NFF board members and officials influenced national team invitations for financial gain.

Gusau’s resignation comes just weeks before the NFF elective congress scheduled to take place on September 27, 2026, in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

His departure and the resignation of the executive committee members are expected to trigger further developments within the football governing body as stakeholders consider the next steps for Nigerian football.
