Former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has described the proposal by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to restore petrol subsidy as a political strategy aimed at winning public support.

Fayemi reportedly likened the proposal to the strategy adopted by the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2023 presidential election, when the party fielded a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket.

According to him, Atiku’s promise to return petrol subsidy should be viewed in the context of the political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He suggested that while the policy could appeal to Nigerians struggling with the rising cost of living, its economic implications should also be carefully considered.

Fayemi’s comments come amid renewed debate over petrol subsidy, with political parties and presidential aspirants presenting different approaches to addressing the country’s economic challenges.
