The Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, has ordered an investigation into an allegation that police investigators demanded N450,000 from a content creator before acting on his complaint.
The allegation was contained in a viral video shared on social media by a content creator identified as Tumma Gabriel.
Gabriel alleged that officers attached to the FCT Police Command’s Criminal Investigation Department demanded N450,000 from him as “mobilisation and petition” before investigating his complaint.
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Thursday.
Adeh said the command was aware of the video and emphasised that the police neither mandated nor encouraged officers to demand payments from members of the public in connection with investigations.
“The Command wishes to state clearly that it does not mandate or encourage its officers to solicit or demand any form of remuneration before, during, or after investigations,” she said.
Following the allegation, the Commissioner of Police ordered a thorough investigation to determine what transpired and identify any officer who may have been involved.
Adeh said any officer found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary action in line with the Police Act and Regulations.“Any person found liable will be dealt with in accordance with the provisions of the Police Act and Regulations,” she added.
The command also urged the complainant to contact the FCT Police Command on 08180382808 and visit its headquarters to provide relevant information that could assist investigators in identifying the officer or officers allegedly involved.
The police said the investigation would establish the facts surrounding the allegation and ensure appropriate action is taken if wrongdoing is confirmed.
