A suspected member of the Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, has surrendered to Nigerian troops alongside his wife and sons in Borno State. The family reportedly surrendered on October 21 at the Forward Operating Base in Pulka, Gwoza Local Government Area of the state.
A counterterrorism expert, Zagazola Makama, disclosed this in a statement posted on X on Friday.
According to Makama, the suspect surrendered to troops of the 192 Battalion (Motorised), operating under the 26 Task Force Brigade.
He said preliminary investigations indicated that the family had fled the Wuja terrorist enclave on the Mandara Mountains before turning themselves in to the military.
Makama added that troops recovered a mobile phone from the family.
He said the suspected terrorist and his family were currently in military custody for further investigation and necessary action.
The surrender comes amid ongoing military operations aimed at dismantling terrorist hideouts and encouraging members of insurgent groups to renounce violence and surrender to security forces.
