Military Salary Hike to Strengthen Anti-Insurgency Operations – Defence Minister.

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), has praised President Bola Tinubu for approving a salary increase of between 30 and 80 per cent for personnel of the Armed Forces, describing the move as a significant boost to troop welfare and military operations across the country.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Assistant on Media, Leah Katung-Babatunde, the Defence Minister said the salary review demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting members of the Armed Forces who continue to confront security challenges nationwide.

According to Musa, the increase in personnel costs from #660 billion to #924 billion reflects the administration’s determination to improve the welfare of officers and soldiers.

He noted that the enhanced remuneration would help ease financial pressures on military personnel and motivate them to intensify efforts in the fight against insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and oil theft.

The minister said troops operating in various theatres across the country would be encouraged by the development and assured Nigerians that the gesture would be matched with greater dedication, discipline and operational effectiveness.Musa also urged military personnel to see the salary adjustment as a renewed call to service and commitment to national security.

He reaffirmed the Ministry of Defence’s support for ongoing efforts to modernise military equipment, improve technological capabilities and enhance the welfare of service personnel and their families.

President Tinubu announced the salary review on Tuesday, stating that the decision was made in recognition of the sacrifices of military personnel engaged in efforts to combat terrorism, banditry and other security threats.

The new salary structure, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, will benefit approximately 250,000 personnel of the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force.

Under the arrangement, personnel from the rank of Private to Staff Sergeant will receive an 80 per cent salary increase, officers from Warrant Officer to Colonel will enjoy a 50 per cent raise, while senior officers from Brigadier-General to General will receive a 30 per cent increase.
