Military Retirees Block Pensions Board Entrance in Abuja Over Pension Increase.

Military retirees on Tuesday blocked the entrance to the Military Pensions Board office in Dutse Alhaji, Abuja, protesting the formula adopted for calculating adjustments to their pensions.

The protesting veterans barricaded the entrance with canopies and chairs to express their dissatisfaction with the implementation of the pension adjustments, while armed soldiers prevented them from entering the premises.

The protest comes weeks after retired military personnel staged a demonstration at the Ministry of Defence in September, demanding an increase in their pensions following salary adjustments for serving military officers and soldiers.

The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, had reportedly assured the retirees that their pensions would be increased in October.

However, the latest demonstration suggests that disagreements persist over how the promised adjustments should be calculated and implemented.

Speaking in an interview with our correspondent on Monday, the Coordinator of the Veterans Association of Nigeria, Lieutenant Colonel Innocent Azubike, accused the Military Pensions Board of adopting a formula that allegedly short-changed some retired military personnel.

Azubike said the planned protest was driven by growing dissatisfaction among veterans over the implementation of consequential adjustments to their pensions.

According to him, the retirees are concerned that the formula used to calculate the increases does not adequately reflect the salary adjustments granted to serving military personnel.

The veterans are seeking a review of the pension adjustment process to ensure that retired personnel receive benefits that appropriately reflect the changes in salaries for serving members of the Armed Forces.

The latest protest highlights the continuing disagreement between military retirees and the authorities over the implementation of the promised pension increases.
