MOHBAD’S FAMILY SEEKS US LABORATORY DETAILS, CALLS FOR POSTPONEMENT OF LIAM’S DNA TEST

The family of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has called for the postponement of the planned genetic examination to establish Liam’s paternity, demanding transparency over the identity and accreditation of the United States laboratory expected to conduct the test.

The family made the request ahead of the examination scheduled for Saturday, October 31, at the Mainland General Hospital/IDH, Yaba, Lagos, insisting that their concerns about transparency and compliance with a subsisting court order must be addressed before the exercise proceeds.

In a statement signed by the family head, Samuel Aloba, and issued on Thursday, the relatives sought clarification on whether the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre, reportedly designated by a court order on May 5, 2026, would conduct the examination or merely collect and forward specimens to a foreign laboratory.

They argued that any decision to engage an overseas laboratory should be properly explained and, where necessary, referred to the court for clarification to ensure compliance with its directive.

The family also requested the full name and address of the proposed American laboratory, evidence of its accreditation, details of the testing procedure and documentation showing how the biological samples would be collected, labelled, preserved and transported.

They further demanded safeguards to verify that the specimens collected in Lagos were the same samples received and analysed by the foreign laboratory.

According to the statement, the relatives were concerned that withholding the laboratory’s identity could undermine accountability and independent verification in a process with significant legal and personal implications.

They, however, clarified that their demands were not intended to frustrate the judicial process or prevent a credible scientific examination, stressing that the result must be supported by a transparent and verifiable procedure.

The family also raised questions about the handling of biological specimens during the post-mortem examination conducted in connection with Mohbad’s death, alleging that enquiries suggested the laboratory reportedly meant to receive the earlier specimens had no record of receiving samples registered in the singer’s name.

They stressed that the allegation required further clarification and was not an independently established finding of wrongdoing against any individual or institution.

The relatives consequently urged the relevant authorities to address their concerns, provide adequate notice to all parties and obtain further court directions where necessary before proceeding with the examination.

Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27. Following his death, the Lagos State Police Command inaugurated a 13-member special investigation team to investigate the circumstances surrounding his passing.

The paternity dispute involving Liam subsequently became part of the legal proceedings initiated by the late singer’s family, which also sought a genetic examination to establish whether the child was biologically related to Mohbad.
