The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned the continued killings and attacks on communities in Plateau State, saying the violence has exposed the failure of government to adequately protect lives and property.
The association expressed concern over recent attacks in Mangu, Barkin Ladi, Riyom and Bokkos Local Government Areas of the state, describing the incidents as gruesome and sustained attacks on innocent citizens.
In a statement, the NBA chairman stressed that the protection of lives and property remained one of the fundamental responsibilities of government under the 1999 Constitution, as amended.
The chairman cited Section 33 of the Constitution, which guarantees every person’s right to life, except in circumstances permitted by law.
The statement read in part, “It therefore suffices to say that the protection of lives and property is the most fundamental responsibility of government, and the NBA frowns at the inability of government to prevent the continuous loss of lives and property in Nigeria and in Plateau State.”NBA condemns attacks during curfew.
The lawyers also criticised the reported attacks on communities despite the curfew imposed by the Plateau State Government following the recent violence.
The NBA said it was particularly disturbing that armed groups allegedly disregarded the curfew and attacked communities that were complying with the government’s directive.
The association said residents had been encouraged to remain vigilant and support security agencies in protecting their communities.
However, it disclosed that some community vigilantes in Kikyo village, Mangu Local Government Area, were killed at their duty post during the curfew hours.
The NBA further said attacks had also been reported in Cantoma and Bin-Per villages in Mangu Local Government Area, as well as Kasa village in Marit District, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.
The association called attention to the worsening security situation and urged authorities to take effective measures to prevent further loss of lives and destruction of property across Plateau State.
