Nigeria Has No Active Ebola Cases After Patient’s Evacuation – WHO.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, Professor Mohamed Janabi, says Nigeria currently has no active Ebola cases following the medical evacuation of the index patient and her husband to Switzerland.

Janabi, in a statement posted on X on Monday, said the patient was clinically stable after Nigerian health workers successfully managed her through the acute phase of the illness.

He explained that the evacuation was carried out because the patient and her husband are Swiss citizens, adding that Switzerland would take responsibility for her continued treatment and monitor her husband.

The WHO official said Nigerian health authorities would continue to monitor 52 contacts linked to the imported case, while Swiss authorities would follow up with the patient’s husband, who is the 53rd contact.

Janabi commended the Federal Government, health workers, emergency responders and other partners for their efforts in managing the case, describing the development as evidence of Africa’s capacity to respond effectively to public health emergencies.

He, however, stressed the need for continued vigilance, particularly in contact tracing, surveillance and other public health measures to prevent further transmission.

Nigeria confirmed the imported Ebola case involving a woman who had travelled from Uganda, prompting health authorities to activate emergency response measures to contain the disease.
