Reps Order Probe Into Illegal Structures Beneath Eko Bridge.

The House of Representatives has ordered an investigation into alleged illegal encroachment and unauthorised commercial activities beneath Eko Bridge and other Federal bridges in Lagos State.

The lawmakers expressed concern that the activities could threaten the structural integrity of the bridges, obstruct maintenance work and endanger commuters.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by the member representing Surulere II Federal Constituency, Lagos State, Lanre Okunlola.

The House mandated its Committees on Works and Public Assets to investigate the legality of containers, warehouses, markets, workshops, makeshift structures and other commercial establishments operating within the bridges’ right-of-way.

The committees are also expected to determine whether any public assets have been unlawfully occupied, leased or used without the necessary approvals.

The lawmakers warned that encroachment around bridge foundations could damage critical structural components, impede routine engineering inspections and delay emergency repairs.

To establish the facts, the House directed the Federal Ministry of Works, the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority, where applicable, and relevant Lagos State physical planning authorities to submit documents relating to the affected locations.

The documents are expected to include approved engineering drawings, survey plans, right-of-way maps, occupancy approvals and other records concerning developments beneath and around the bridges.

The House called for appropriate enforcement measures, including the removal of structures found to be illegally occupying Federal right-of-way corridors. It also proposed long-term measures to protect and monitor Federal bridges nationwide, while directing the committees to submit their findings within six weeks for further legislative action.

Eko Bridge is a major transport link connecting Lagos Mainland with Lagos Island and is under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Works.a

The outcome of the investigation is expected to establish the legal status of commercial activities beneath the bridges and recommend measures to prevent further encroachment and protect critical infrastructure.
