The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has intensified nationwide enforcement of the Federal Government’s ban on alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and PET/plastic bottles below 200ml.
NAFDAC, in a statement dated August 24, 2026, said the enforcement followed the expiration of the approved transition period given to manufacturers and other stakeholders to comply with the directive.
The ban, which was introduced following concerns over the widespread availability of high-alcohol-content beverages in small and easily concealed packages, took effect on January 1, 2026.
According to the agency, enforcement operations are now being carried out nationwide, targeting manufacturers, markets, motor parks, retail outlets, bars and distribution centres where prohibited products may still be found.
NAFDAC said banned products recovered during the operations would be recalled, inventoried and destroyed under its supervision, with the cost borne by the affected manufacturers.
The agency also said affected production facilities must meet specific compliance requirements before they can resume operations. These include the dismantling, permanent disabling or reconfiguration of production lines used to manufacture the prohibited products.
NAFDAC warned that manufacturers who fail to comply with the directive could face regulatory sanctions, including continued closure of facilities, suspension or revocation of product registrations and other enforcement measures.
The agency explained that the policy is primarily a public health measure aimed at reducing access to high-alcohol-content products, particularly among children and young people, and curbing alcohol-related harm.
NAFDAC, however, said it remains committed to working with compliant industry stakeholders while ensuring full enforcement of the Federal Government’s directive.
The agency urged manufacturers, distributors, retailers and members of the public to cooperate with the ongoing enforcement exercise and ensure that prohibited alcoholic beverages are removed from circulation.
