The Nigerian Institution of Highway and Transportation Engineers (NIHTE) has called for a major overhaul of Nigeria’s infrastructure planning to make roads, bridges, drainage systems and other public assets more resilient to the growing impacts of climate change.

The call was made on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, in Abuja, during the 2026 Annual Conference of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Bwari Branch.

NIHTE Acting National Chairman, Dr Bola Mudasiru, made the call while presenting a paper titled “Sustainable Infrastructure, Resilient Nation: Engineering Solutions for Growth and Climate Action.”

Mudasiru stressed the need for climate considerations to be integrated into the planning, design, construction and maintenance of infrastructure across the country.

He warned that increasing flooding, erosion, extreme rainfall and other climate-related challenges could continue to damage critical infrastructure, disrupt transportation networks and increase the financial burden on government if urgent measures are not taken.

NIHTE therefore urged governments and relevant stakeholders to adopt long-term, climate-smart infrastructure strategies that prioritise resilience, sustainability and proper maintenance to safeguard public assets and support Nigeria’s economic development.
