The Chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, Dr Mohammed Shehu, has warned public officers that corruption extends beyond bribery and diversion of public funds.
Shehu said abuse of office, conflict of interest, favouritism, manipulation of official processes and disregard for established rules are also forms of corruption.
He spoke on Monday at the opening of a five-day sensitisation and capacity-building workshop organised by the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit of the RMAFC for officers from the commission’s North-West zonal and state offices in Kaduna.
The workshop, holding at Bafra Hotel from September 14 to 18, 2026, is being organised in partnership with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.
Represented by the RMAFC Federal Commissioner representing Kwara State and Provost of the Anti-Corruption Transparency Unit, Ismail Agaka, Shehu said the constitutional responsibilities of the commission placed it at the centre of Nigeria’s fiscal governance.
He stressed that this position required the commission’s personnel to maintain the highest standards of integrity and accountability.“Corruption does not begin only with the taking of bribes or diversion of public funds.
It also manifests in the abuse of office, conflict of interest, favouritism, manipulation of official processes and deliberate disregard for established rules.
“We must, therefore, develop a culture where integrity is not merely preached but demonstrated in our daily conduct,” he said.
Shehu urged participants to see the fight against corruption as a collective responsibility, rather than one that should be left to the ACTU or ICPC.“The fight against corruption is not the responsibility of ACTU or ICPC alone.
It is a personal and institutional responsibility,” he said.The RMAFC chairman further charged the officers to ensure that every decision taken, public resource handled and official process undertaken met the standards of legality, accountability, fairness and transparency.
He said public trust could only be earned when public officers carried out their duties honestly and transparently and in the overall interest of the people.
Shehu also encouraged the participants to make effective use of the five-day training to improve their understanding of anti-corruption practices and apply the lessons to their daily responsibilities.
Earlier, the ACTU Chairman and Director of the Audit Department of RMAFC, Idris Musa, said the workshop was designed to strengthen integrity, transparency and accountability across the commission’s operations.
Musa urged the participants to actively engage with the resource persons and translate the knowledge acquired into improved service delivery.
He said, “We must reject abuse of office, conflict of interest and every practice that undermines due process. Our conduct must always justify the public trust placed in us.”
Participants at the workshop expressed optimism that the training would further strengthen transparency, accountability and integrity in the discharge of their official duties.
