Gas Shortages, Low Water Levels Cut Power Generation Nationwide – NISO.

Nigeria’s electricity supply has worsened following shortages of gas to thermal power plants and reduced water levels in hydroelectric reservoirs.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, attributing the decline in power generation to inadequate gas supply and reduced water inflows into hydroelectric dams.

NISO explained that the challenges had reduced electricity available for distribution, forcing Distribution Companies (DisCos) to cut supply hours and increase load shedding across their networks.

The operator said the impact varies across distribution companies, depending on available generation and their respective electricity allocations.

The development comes amid intense heat across the country, worsening the hardship faced by households and businesses that depend on electricity for cooling, refrigeration, water pumping and other essential activities.

NISO acknowledged the difficulties faced by consumers, assuring that it was working to maintain grid stability and optimise available electricity generation.

The operator also reaffirmed its commitment to diversifying Nigeria’s energy mix to improve electricity supply and strengthen the resilience of the national grid.

It, however, noted that the current electricity shortfall was being managed within the prevailing operational constraints.
