TUC FCT Rejects NLC Strike, Directs Members to Resume Work.

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has dissociated itself from the indefinite strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over its dispute with the FCT Administration.

The council directed its affiliate unions and members to continue their normal duties, saying it was neither consulted nor involved in the decision to embark on the industrial action.

The NLC FCT Council had directed workers in both the public and private sectors to begin an indefinite strike on October 7, following a dispute between the FCT Administration and the Nigeria Union of Teachers.

However, in a statement dated October 8, the TUC FCT Council Secretary, Comrade Sunday Joseph, said the strike directive was issued without consultation with the council or its affiliate unions.

The council urged its members to address issues affecting workers and children through dialogue and constructive engagement rather than actions that could disrupt education and other essential activities.

It warned that no member should be intimidated or forced to participate in an industrial action not authorised by the TUC FCT Council.

The council also cautioned affiliate leaders against establishing enforcement committees based on directives that did not originate from its leadership.

Expressing concern about the welfare of teachers, children and other workers in the FCT, the union maintained that disputes should be resolved through consultation and established industrial relations procedures.

It urged members to remain calm and law-abiding, adding that further guidance would be issued if the situation changed.

The TUC FCT Council reaffirmed its commitment to protecting workers’ interests and pursuing peaceful engagement with relevant stakeholders to resolve the dispute without disrupting access to education.
